High School Curriculum
What is High School Curriculum?
High school is a time for students to explore their interests and begin to prepare for their future. The curriculum is designed to give students a well-rounded education and the opportunity to succeed in college and beyond.
During the four years of high school, students will take courses in English, math, science, social studies, and electives. English courses will focus on reading, writing, and speaking skills, while math courses will cover topics such as algebra, geometry, and calculus. Science courses will varied depending on the school, but may include biology, chemistry, and physics. Social studies courses will introduce students to history, geography, civics, and economics.
Electives are courses that allow students to explore their interests. These can include arts, music, languages, technology, and more. High school students should take advantage of these courses to learn more about their passions and build skills that will help them in college and their future career.
How to Learn High School Curriculum
A high school curriculum needs to balance two goals: a well-rounded education and preparation for whatever comes next (college, trade, or work). Start by knowing the target — if college is likely, check typical admission requirements early, since they shape course choices in math, science, and foreign language.
Plan the four years as a whole: core subjects (English, math, science, social studies) each year, plus electives that develop the student's strengths and interests. Keep records from the start — a transcript, course descriptions, and reading lists — because you'll need them for applications. For homeschoolers, decide how much to outsource (community college, online courses, tutors) for advanced or specialized subjects. Build in increasing independence each year so the student is ready to manage their own learning by graduation.
