Some resources will then progress into what sounds blends make as well as simple words, as your student progresses into reading. These resources will typically be targeted at preschoolers and kindergarteners.

What is Alphabet?

The alphabet is the foundation of reading and writing. It is a collection of 26 letters that represent the sounds of spoken language. The alphabet is also a system of symbols that can be used to represent other things, such as numbers, concepts, and ideas.

How to Learn Alphabet

Learning the alphabet has two parts that are easy to confuse: letter names and letter sounds. Both matter, but the sounds are what unlock reading, so don't stop at singing the ABC song. Teach that each letter makes a sound (or a few), and connect letters to words the child knows — 'B says /b/, like in ball.'

Multisensory works best at this age: tracing letters, forming them in sand or playdough, matching uppercase to lowercase, and pointing them out on signs and cereal boxes. Focus on a few letters at a time, often starting with the ones in the child's own name. Keep it playful and short — this is the foundation of phonics, and a positive early experience matters more than speed.
