About 1st Grade Math Curriculum

In first grade, Math Curriculum is designed to help students develop a strong foundation in basic mathematical concepts. The curriculum is focused on four main areas: Number Sense, Operations and Algebraic Thinking, Geometry, and Measurement and Data. In each of these areas, students are taught basic concepts and skills that will help them succeed in math.

Number sense is the ability to understand and work with numbers. In first grade, students learn to count, to recognize and write numbers, and to begin to understand place value. They also learn to add and subtract within 20.

Operations and algebraic thinking involve the ability to solve problems using arithmetic. In first grade, students learn to add, subtract, multiply, and divide. They also learn to identify and use basic algebraic concepts such as variables and equations.

Geometry is the study of shapes and their properties. In first grade, students learn to identify and name basic shapes, to describe their properties, and to begin to understand spatial relationships.

Measurement and data are the ability to understand and use measurements. In first grade, students learn to measure length, weight, and capacity. They also learn to organize and interpret data.
