The Joy of Reading and Writing

Calvert’s 1st Grade curriculum harnesses the joy parents feel watching their child develop into individual critical thinkers. Our engaging and challenging activities are designed to nurture a full range of phonemic awareness, phonics, comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, and fluency skills. Calvert will help you guide your student through a distinctive and well-rounded curriculum and prepare him or her to express ideas in his or her own words.

Two different math options are available with our 1st Grade curriculum: 1) Calvert Math, a traditional math program where students are introduced to addition and subtraction up to two digit numbers, learn simple fractions, find the distinction between solid and plane shapes, develop beginner skills with money, discover fact families, and problem solve with place value and telling time or 2) Math in Focus, a new, modernized math approach where students compare and order sets of objects and numbers less than 100, create number bonds and fact families, measure length, area, weight and capacity with nonstandard units, and identify multiplication and division as operations involving equal units.

Additionally, you and your child will discover and explore social studies for the first time in the curriculum. With read- aloud narratives, your child can hear the biographies of well-known explorers, political figures, inventors, and leaders in American life.
