Power Electronics
What is Power Electronics?
Power electronics is the application of solid-state electronics to the control and conversion of electric power. It is a rapidly growing field with applications in a wide variety of industries, including automotive, aerospace, computer, consumer, industrial, medical, and military.
Power electronics devices are used to convert electrical energy from one form to another, such as DC to AC, AC to DC, or AC to AC of different frequencies. These devices can be used to control the flow of electrical energy, or to change the voltage or current level of the energy.
Power electronics devices are typically made from semiconductor materials, such as diodes, transistors, and MOSFETs. These materials can be used to create a wide variety of circuit topologies, such as boost converters, buck converters, and H-bridge circuits.
Power electronics circuits are used in a wide variety of applications, including switch-mode power supplies, motor controllers, and solar inverters.
How to Learn Power Electronics
Power electronics sits on top of circuit theory, so make sure the fundamentals — voltage, current, and especially how inductors and capacitors behave — are rock solid first. From there the field is about converting and controlling electrical power efficiently: rectifiers, inverters, and DC-DC converters (buck, boost, and beyond).
Learn the switching devices at the core of it all — diodes, MOSFETs, IGBTs — and how switching them on and off rapidly lets you transform power with minimal loss. Pair theory with simulation (SPICE tools are invaluable for seeing waveforms) and, when you can, real bench work, since parasitics and thermal effects don't show up in idealized math. Work through canonical converter topologies until you can analyze each one's operation and design for a target output.
