About Equations

Solving equations in algebra is a process of reversing the order of operations to solve for a desired variable. This is done by using inverse operations to "undo" the operations in the equation and solve for the desired variable. Inverse operations include addition and subtraction (opposite operations), multiplication and division (inverse operations), and raising a number to a power and taking a root (inverse operations).

Addition and subtraction are opposite operations, so they can be used to "undo" each other. For example, if we have the equation "x + 3 = 5", we can use subtraction to solve for x by subtracting 3 from both sides of the equation. This gives us "x + 3 - 3 = 5 - 3", which simplifies to "x = 2".

Multiplication and division are inverse operations, so they can be used to "undo" each other. For example, if we have the equation "4x = 12", we can use division to solve for x by dividing both sides of the equation by 4. This gives us "4x/4 = 12/4", which simplifies to "x = 3".

Raising a number to a power and taking a root are inverse operations, so they can be used to "undo" each other. For example, if we have the equation "x^2 = 9", we can use square roots to solve for x by taking the square root of both sides of the equation. This gives us "(x^2)^(1/2) = 9^(1/2)", which simplifies to "x = 3".
