Money Smart for Young People
Money Smart for Young People is a completely free financial-education curriculum from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), the U.S. government agency that insures bank deposits. Developed with educators and field-tested in classrooms, it is one of the most widely used and trusted money-skills programs in the country — and every component can be downloaded at no cost.
The curriculum is split into four grade bands — Pre-K to Grade 2, Grades 3-5, Grades 6-8, and Grades 9-12 — so families can match lessons to a child's level. Each band includes detailed, scripted lesson plans, hands-on student activities, and a companion Parent/Caregiver Guide with conversation starters and real-life money moments to practice at home. Topics build year over year: identifying coins and bills, needs versus wants, setting savings goals, earning and budgeting, the basics of banking and credit, paying for college, and protecting yourself from fraud.
For homeschoolers, the structured-but-flexible format is a major strength. The scripted plans mean a parent needs no finance background to teach confidently, while the printable worksheets and group activities adapt easily to one or several learners. Because it is standards-aligned and government-produced, it is also fully secular and classroom-neutral.
Money Smart pairs naturally with other free resources in our directory: use the Money as You Grow activities for the youngest learners, Hands on Banking for applied banking practice, and Next Gen Personal Finance for a full high-school course. Together they cover the entire Pre-K through 12 personal-finance journey without spending a dollar.
