Library of Congress: Teacher Resources

The Library of Congress holds the largest collection of primary sources in the United States, and its Teachers program exists to make that collection usable in a classroom or at a kitchen table. Everything in this section is free, requires no account, and is in the public domain or cleared for educational use.

The most immediately useful part is the Primary Source Sets. Each set gathers roughly a dozen to two dozen digitized documents, photographs, maps, letters, political cartoons, or recordings around a single topic, and pairs them with a teacher's guide that supplies historical context and suggested discussion questions. Topics range widely across American history, including the Constitution, westward expansion, immigration, the Civil War, Reconstruction, the Dust Bowl, the civil rights movement, and women's suffrage.

Alongside the sets, the site publishes full lesson plans contributed and reviewed by classroom teachers, and a set of primary-source analysis tools. Those tools are worth singling out for homeschoolers: they are simple, reusable worksheets that walk a student through observing a source, reflecting on it, and forming questions about it, with separate versions tuned for photographs, maps, political cartoons, sound recordings, and manuscripts. They give a parent a repeatable structure for teaching source analysis without needing to design one.

The material assumes a reader who can handle period language, so it fits best from roughly fourth grade upward, with the richest use in middle and high school. Younger students can still work from the photographs and maps with an adult reading alongside.
