AbacusBrainy
AbacusBrainy is a free website that teaches the abacus (soroban) to children, with guidance written for the parents who are helping them at home. It explains what the abacus is, how the beads represent numbers and whether abacus study suits a particular child, and then gives families the tools to practice without buying a kit or joining a class.
The lessons start with an eight-step tutorial for parents and beginners, from what each bead means to carrying, and continue with separate guides for addition and subtraction, skip counting, multiplication and division. Each guide includes worked examples and guided sums that link to the on-screen abacus.
The practice tools need nothing installed. A seven-rod on-screen soroban lets children move beads, show any number and watch the rods change as they add or subtract. A "set the number" game gives ten rounds at a chosen difficulty, and "practice by operation" serves ten questions at a time across five levels, from single-digit sums to three-row sums, two-digit multiplication and division with remainders. A wrong answer shows the right one and how to check it, and the site suggests moving up a level after two scores of 8 or more.
The worksheet maker builds a fresh printable sheet each time, by operation and level, with 20, 30 or 40 questions and an answer key on page 2. The site is written mainly for families in India and is available in English and Hindi, but the lessons and tools work for any child learning arithmetic, typically ages 5 to 12. Everything is free and needs no sign-up.
