Learning How to Learn (Coursera)

Learning How to Learn is the online course version of the ideas in Barbara Oakley's books, taught with neuroscientist Terrence Sejnowski of the Salk Institute. It is one of the most-taken courses on Coursera, with over four million enrollments and a 4.8 rating across more than ninety thousand reviews, and the full video content can be audited at no cost.

The material is organized into four short modules. The first sets up the distinction between focused mode, the concentrated attention you use to work a problem you understand, and diffuse mode, the loose background processing that happens on a walk or in the shower and is where unfamiliar problems tend to come unstuck. The rest covers chunking, which is how practice compresses a set of steps into a single retrievable unit; procrastination, treated as an avoidance response to discomfort rather than a willpower failure, with the Pomodoro technique as the standard countermeasure; and memory, sleep and testing, including why spaced practice and self-testing beat rereading.

For a homeschool it fits two audiences at once. A high school student can take it as a short standalone unit at the start of a year, and the parent teaching them gets a compact grounding in the same research. Because it is video-based with short lessons, it works as a few weeks of once-a-week viewing rather than a term-long commitment, and the ideas are concrete enough to apply to whatever subject the student is struggling with that week.

Some honest limits. Auditing gives you the videos and readings; graded assignments and the certificate sit behind payment or a Coursera Plus subscription, so a family that wants credit will pay. The course is pitched at adults and older teens, and while the concepts are accessible from roughly middle school upward, the presentation is not aimed at children. It also teaches principles rather than a system, so a student who needs a daily structure should pair it with a planner or a workbook that supplies one.
