Late, Lost, and Unprepared

Executive function is the umbrella term for the mental skills that let a student start a task, hold a plan in mind, resist distraction, keep track of time and check their own work. Late, Lost, and Unprepared, by clinical child psychologist Joyce Cooper-Kahn and learning specialist Laurie Dietzel, is the parent-facing book that explains those skills one at a time and gives home strategies for each.

Its most valuable move is diagnostic rather than prescriptive. The authors spend the early chapters separating executive skill weaknesses from the things they get mistaken for, chiefly laziness, defiance and low ability. A child who cannot start a five-paragraph essay may be missing task initiation, or working memory, or the ability to estimate how long the essay will take, and the right intervention is different in each case. The book gives informal profiles to help a parent work out which skills are weak, then treats each skill in its own section with strategies scaled from young elementary through high school.

The strategies themselves are refreshingly modest. Rather than promising to remediate the deficit, the authors argue for a mix of building the skill where it can be built and engineering the environment around it where it cannot. Visible timers, checklists posted where the work happens, breaking assignments to a size the child can hold, and adult scaffolding that is explicitly planned to fade. For homeschooling parents this framing is directly usable, because you already control the environment that the book asks a school parent to negotiate for.

It is a book for parents, not a book to hand a child, and it reads like the clinical text it partly is. Families looking for a fast, cheerful read will find it dense, and there is a fair amount of background before the strategies begin. It is also aimed at genuine difficulty rather than ordinary childhood scattiness, so a family with a typically developing but messy nine-year-old may find it heavier than the problem warrants.
