Johnny Tremain

Esther Forbes'' Johnny Tremain has been the backbone of American Revolution study in homeschools for generations, and it earned the Newbery Medal in 1944. The story follows a gifted fourteen-year-old silversmith''s apprentice in pre-Revolutionary Boston whose hand is crippled in an accident, forcing him out of his trade and, gradually, into the orbit of the Sons of Liberty.

What makes the book so useful for teaching is that Johnny is present for the events a textbook lists in a single sentence. He carries messages for the Boston Observers, watches the Boston Tea Party from the wharf, and is on the ground when the fighting begins at Lexington and Concord. Real figures — Paul Revere, Samuel Adams, John Hancock, Dr. Joseph Warren — move through the narrative as working people with arguments and doubts rather than as portraits on a wall. Students who have only met the Revolution as a list of causes come away understanding that ordinary Bostonians disagreed sharply about whether it was worth it.
