HARVEST Reading Placement

HARVEST is a free reading placement test for children roughly in the kindergarten to fifth grade range, run in a browser by a parent sitting next to the child. It answers the question that stalls a lot of homeschool reading plans: not "can my child read" but "where exactly should we start". Buying a reading curriculum without that answer is how families end up either boring a child with material they mastered a year ago or quietly drowning them.

The assessment takes about fifteen minutes and is organised into seven sections that follow the order reading skills actually develop, from the ear through the eye to the voice. It starts with phonemic awareness (rhyming, blending and segmenting sounds), then letter names and sounds, then decoding of short vowels, blends, digraphs and long vowels. From there it moves to high-frequency sight words, encoding (spelling from dictation, which is the writing side of the same phonics knowledge), fluency measured as words correct per minute on a levelled passage, and finally comprehension questions about what the child just read. The decoding section routes adaptively, skipping items a child has clearly already mastered, which is what keeps the whole thing to a single sitting.

The output is the useful part. Instead of a bare score, it produces a printable report naming a recommended starting point, what is already secure, what is emerging, and the reasoning behind the recommendation. A sample report shown on the site reads, for a mid-kindergarten six year old, that letter sounds and CVC decoding are secure but consonant blends are emerging, and that the child should start at an early first grade level and add focused blends practice. That is the kind of specific, actionable read a parent can act on the same week, and it doubles as a record you can keep and re-run in a couple of months to see growth.

Two practical notes. It runs entirely in your browser: the assessment, the scoring and the report are all local, nothing is uploaded, and there is no login or account required to use it. And it is explicitly faith-anchored, written for Christian homeschool families, with gentle "image of God" language throughout and no cartoon styling. That framing is part of the product rather than incidental to it.

It is made by Faith Schooling, who sell a paid K-5 reading, math and logic curriculum, and the recommended starting point it names is a level within their own Faith Readers sequence. The assessment is genuinely free and genuinely useful on its own terms, and the skills it measures are standard ones, so the results transfer to any phonics-based program you choose.
