The Executive Functioning Workbook for Teens

Most executive function books are addressed to the adult. Sharon A. Hansen's The Executive Functioning Workbook for Teens is addressed to the student, and it is a workbook rather than a narrative: short activities, self-assessments and worksheets the teenager fills in. That format is the whole point. Adolescents who have been told for years that they need to get organized rarely change because another adult explains it again; they sometimes change when they work through it themselves and see their own answers on the page.

The activities are grouped around the skills that actually break down in high school: getting started on work you do not want to do, estimating how long something will take, prioritizing when everything is due at once, keeping materials where you can find them, managing a long-range project, and noticing when your own plan has failed. Each activity is short, most run one to three pages, and there is space to write. Hansen is a school counselor, and the exercises read like counseling sessions rendered on paper.

For homeschooling families the workbook is a good bridge into independent work. A high schooler heading toward dual enrollment, a co-op with real deadlines, or a first job needs to own the planning rather than inherit a parent's system, and this gives a structured way to hand it over. It works as a once-a-week assignment across a semester better than it works as a book to read straight through.

Two limits worth stating. It is the most expensive item in this category and it is consumable, so a family with several teens will need multiple copies or a workaround. More importantly, a workbook only works on a teenager who will do it. A student who is actively resistant will fill in the boxes without engaging, and no worksheet solves that; those families are better served by a parent-facing guide plus outside accountability. Best fit is ninth grade through college age, for a student who knows they have a problem and wants a handle on it.
