CircuitMess Codee 2.0 DIY Virtual Pet Kit

Codee 2.0 from CircuitMess is a DIY virtual pet — a small handheld companion that students build from components and then program themselves. The kit contains the main circuit board, a LiPo battery, acrylic casing, button caps, screws and a screwdriver, and the whole thing goes together without soldering. A build guide with over 100 photographs walks through each step, which makes this a realistic independent project for an upper-elementary or middle-school student.

The educational hook is that a virtual pet is a genuinely good vehicle for teaching a couple of concepts that are otherwise abstract. Because the pet has to keep track of time even when the device is idle, students learn what a real-time clock is and why it matters. For homeschoolers, Codee works well as an entry point into physical computing for a child who is a little too young for the more involved CircuitMess builds.
