Trace & Play

Trace and Play is a letter formation app for iPhone and iPad aimed at children aged roughly 3 to 6. A large letter appears with a faint guide underneath, the child traces it with a finger or an Apple Pencil, and the app gives immediate feedback on whether the stroke followed the shape. Then it moves to the next letter.

The design decisions are the interesting part. The letterforms use proper curves rather than the polygon approximations that cheaper tracing apps rely on, which matters for C, O, S and G where a child copying a faceted shape learns the wrong motion. The feedback tolerance is deliberately forgiving, tuned for hands that are still developing fine motor control, so a wobbly but correct stroke is encouraged rather than rejected. It works in any orientation, which is more useful than it sounds when a small child is holding a tablet.

All 26 uppercase letters are free, with no account, no time limit and no advertising. A single one-time in-app purchase of 1.99 US dollars unlocks lowercase a to z and the numerals. That is an unusually honest structure for this category: the free tier is a complete uppercase alphabet rather than three sample letters, so you can find out whether your child takes to it before paying anything.

Two things to be aware of. It requires iOS 17 or later, so older hardware is out. And it is a new app from an independent developer, published in July 2026 with no user ratings yet, so there is no body of third-party feedback to weigh against our own testing. The free tier is the way to evaluate it.

Best used as a supplement alongside physical handwriting practice rather than a replacement. Screen tracing builds letter recognition and stroke direction, but pencil control on paper is a different skill.
