The Golden Goblet by Eloise Jarvis McGraw is a Newbery Honor novel set in ancient Egypt, and it is one of the most frequently assigned pieces of historical fiction in homeschool ancient-history programs. Ranofer, an orphaned boy apprenticed in Thebes, wants to become a goldsmith like his father. Instead he is trapped under his violent half-brother Gebu — and then discovers a golden goblet in Gebu's room that points to the robbery of a royal tomb.

The novel earns its place on reading lists because the history is carried by the plot rather than bolted on. Readers absorb how a craftsman's workshop operated, what an apprenticeship meant, how the Nile shaped daily life, and what tomb robbery represented in a culture organised around the afterlife — all while following a genuine mystery. McGraw researched the period carefully, and the detail holds up.

It is usually placed in grades 5 through 8. Families running a four-year history cycle typically schedule it in the ancient-Egypt term, often alongside a spine text, and it works equally well as an independent read or a read-aloud. The chapters are short and end on hooks, which makes it a reliable choice for students who normally resist historical fiction.

Content notes for parents: Gebu is physically abusive toward Ranofer, and while the beatings are not described graphically, the atmosphere of fear is sustained through much of the book. The tension in the final tomb sequence is genuine. Most families find it appropriate from about age ten, with younger or more sensitive readers doing better with it as a read-aloud. Discussion questions and unit studies for the title are widely available, since it has been a classroom staple for decades.
