Side by Side is built on a simple premise that most beginner ESL books abandon: language is learned by using it with another person. Every unit centers on a short model conversation, which the learners read together, then adapt by swapping in new vocabulary, then perform from memory. The grammar is taught through those dialogues rather than before them.

That design makes it unusually well suited to homeschooling, and specifically to the situation where a parent and child are working through English together. Most ESL material assumes either a solo adult learner grinding through exercises or a classroom of a dozen students, and neither maps onto a kitchen table with two people at it. Side by Side maps onto exactly that. Siblings work well too, and a co-op group even better.

Book 1 is the true beginner level, covering the present tense, basic questions, adjectives, prepositions of place, and the vocabulary of home, family, work, and daily routine. The series runs through four levels, so it is the start of a long path. Third edition is the one to buy; earlier editions are widely available secondhand and look dated enough to put teenagers off.

The obvious limitation is that it does not work alone. If nobody is available to be the second voice, the dialogues collapse into reading practice and most of the value evaporates. There is accompanying audio which partially fills that gap, but a learner genuinely studying alone is better served by a self-study course like English for Everyone.

Written practice is also lighter than in a workbook-driven program, since the emphasis is on speaking. Families wanting accuracy alongside fluency usually pair it with a grammar reference. At around fifteen dollars for the student book, that pairing is still inexpensive.
