English for Everyone Practice Book Level 1: Beginner

This is the workbook companion to DK's English for Everyone Level 1 course book, and the honest framing is that the two are really one product sold as two. The course book explains and demonstrates; this one is where the learner actually writes, and writing is where a second language moves from recognized to owned.

The exercises track the course book unit by unit, so a family can run them in lockstep: read the visual explanation in one, then do the corresponding drills in the other the same day or the next. Exercise types vary more than most ESL workbooks manage. There are gap fills, sentence reordering, matching, error correction, and short guided writing prompts, which keeps a daily half hour from becoming mechanical.

An answer key is included, which is the detail that makes this practical for homeschooling. A parent who is not confident in English can still check work, and an independent older learner can self-correct without waiting for anyone. For a household where the parent is learning alongside the child, that removes the main bottleneck.

Where it falls short is speaking and listening. This is a book of written exercises and it makes no pretense otherwise. A learner who does only this will build accurate grammar and a passive vocabulary while remaining unable to hold a conversation, which is a common and frustrating outcome in home ESL programs. Pair it with free audio and video, or with a conversation partner, and treat the workbook as the accuracy track rather than the whole course.

At around fifteen dollars it is inexpensive for the amount of practice included, and it is consumable, so plan on a fresh copy if you have a second child coming through behind the first.
