English for Everyone Course Book Level 1: Beginner

English for Everyone Level 1 is the first book in DK's visual English course, and it solves a problem most beginner ESL material does not: it is genuinely designed to be used without a teacher. Every grammar point is introduced through a picture and a worked example before any rule is stated, which means a learner who cannot yet read an English explanation can still follow what is happening on the page.

The book covers the ground you would expect from a first year: present simple and continuous, articles, plurals, basic question forms, possessives, and the everyday vocabulary sets around family, food, work, home, and travel. What sets it apart is density of illustration. Where a traditional textbook would give you a rule and three examples, this gives you a diagram showing the sentence being built, then the same structure repeated across a dozen contexts until it stops feeling foreign.

For homeschool use it works in two quite different ways. An older beginner, roughly ten and up, can work through it independently at a page or two a day, which frees a parent who is already teaching several other subjects. A younger child will need an adult reading alongside, but the visual layout means that adult does not need to be a trained English teacher or even a confident English speaker themselves. That matters in immigrant and expat households where the parent is often learning too.

The main limitation is that it is a course book, not a workbook. There is far less written practice than a learner needs to make anything stick, and the companion practice book exists precisely because of that gap. Budget for both if you are using this as your spine rather than a supplement. There is also free audio available online for every unit, which is essential rather than optional here, since a visual course with no listening component will produce a learner who reads well and cannot follow a conversation.

Levels 2 and 3 continue the same method through intermediate grammar, so this is the start of a multi-year path rather than a one-off purchase.
