What is Anxiety?

Anxiety is a normal response to stress. It can be helpful in times of danger, but can also become a problem when it is out of proportion to the situation or lasts for a long time. People with anxiety disorders often have trouble controlling their anxiety and may feel anxious most of the time. Anxiety disorders can cause physical symptoms, such as a pounding heart, sweaty palms, and trembling. They can also lead to mental symptoms, such as feeling overwhelmed, difficulty concentrating, and irritability.

There are several different types of anxiety disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, phobias, and social anxiety disorder. Treatment for anxiety disorders often includes therapy and medication.
