Utterb

Utterb is a subscription app for people starting Spanish from scratch. Rather than a grammar syllabus, it front-loads a core set of the most useful words and phrases, called the Core 100s: essentials, verbs, nouns, adjectives and phrases. Those are taught through songs written around that vocabulary, then reinforced with vocabulary practice, spaced repetition and shadowing, where the learner speaks along with a recording to work on rhythm and pronunciation.

The distinctive feature is photo-based courses. A learner uploads photos from their own life and the app builds practice material around them, so the sentences they learn describe their family, their work or the places they go rather than a textbook character ordering coffee. For an adult learner who has stalled in a generic course, being able to talk about your own week is a reasonable motivation hook.

The song player is built for multitasking. Karaoke mode lets you mute the singer and take the line yourself, or mute the backing track to focus on the words, and mix-and-match lets you pair a stretch of song with a set of vocabulary drills, for example ten minutes of listening plus five minutes of drilling. Drills can be bookmarked and resumed, and the app circles back automatically to items you missed.

Practical notes before you sign up. Utterb is Spanish only, aimed at beginners, and the publisher positions it as supplementary practice rather than a full course, so it pairs with a curriculum instead of replacing one. It is a paid subscription with an account required: $6 a month billed monthly, $15 a quarter (about $5 a month) or $48 a year (about $4 a month), each including ten photo uploads and unlimited songs, drills and mix-and-match. We found no free tier advertised on the site. A conversation-partner placement is offered as a separate service at an additional fee.

Because courses are generated from uploaded photos, families should think about what they upload, particularly photos of children. The learning content itself is adult-facing and works best for older teens and adults; younger students are better served by the Spanish curricula elsewhere in our directory.
