Project Gutenberg

Project Gutenberg is the oldest digital library on the internet, founded in 1971, and it remains one of the most useful free resources available to a homeschooling family. It offers more than 75,000 ebooks whose United States copyright has expired, which in practice means nearly the entire canon of classic literature is available to download legally and at no cost.

For homeschoolers, the practical value is straightforward: most of the literature assigned in middle school and high school is here. Shakespeare, Austen, Dickens, Twain, the Brontes, Homer, Poe, Melville, Verne, and Louisa May Alcott are all present in full text. Rather than buying a class set of paperbacks, a family can download the same titles to a tablet, e-reader, phone, or computer, or simply read them in a browser.

Every book is offered in several formats. EPUB and Kindle files work on dedicated e-readers, plain text and HTML versions open anywhere, and a growing subset of titles has free human-read or computer-generated audiobook versions. Because the files carry no DRM, they can be copied freely between a family's devices, annotated, or reformatted for a student who needs larger type.

The catalog is browsable by author, title, subject, and language, and the "Top 100" lists are a genuinely useful starting point for choosing a next read. Beyond fiction, the collection includes historical documents, early scientific works, philosophy, poetry, folklore, and reference books, which makes it a source of primary texts for history and philosophy study as well as literature.

Two caveats are worth setting expectations around. Because the texts are public domain, they are older works, so contemporary titles are not available. And the scans are volunteer-proofread, so occasional typographical artifacts appear in less-trafficked books. Neither detracts much from what is, for literature study, an unusually complete free resource.
