6-8 Core Curriculum – Geography: The United States

What is the geographical perspective? How does it influence how we learn and think about people, events, and places? This unique unit study offers an introduction to the geographical perspective using diverse lesson plans, primary sources, and large map making activities to help students understand the links between geography, history, cultures, and more.

For middle school students, the study of geography moves beyond locating places on a map; at this age, students begin to question the location of places, the experience of people, and the causes of events. In addition, geography and history are closely intertwined. Therefore, students will explore the history and the development of the United States using a geographical perspective. Native cultures, European settlement, specific industries, selected immigrant groups, and more are brought in to this unique study.

This unit study offers a review of state capitals, major cities, and physical geography. If your children have not studied these concepts previously, we recommend beginning with Grades 3-5 United States Geography before completing this title.

Take a peek inside:
The connection between geography and history
State capitals and major cities
Physical landscapes
The role of geography in the development of transportation in the United States
Geography and history in art and music
Regional cultures in the United States
Immigrant populations
Population trends and changes

and much more!
