About Functions & Equations

Functions are a way of describing a relationship between two variables, usually denoted by an equation. In many cases, a function can be graphed on a coordinate plane. The simplest kind of function is a linear function, where the graph is a straight line. More complicated functions can have curved graphs.

Equations are mathematical statements that say that two things are equal. In an equation, we use one or more variables to represent unknown quantities. We can use equations to solve problems by finding the values of the variables that make the equation true.

Functions can be linear or nonlinear. Linear functions have a constant rate of change, meaning that the function's output increases at a constant rate as the input increases. Nonlinear functions do not have a constant rate of change.

Equations can be solved for a specific variable. This is called solving for the variable. Solving for a variable allows you to find the value of the variable that makes the equation true.
