About AP Psychology

Assuming you would like an overview of the AP Psychology course:

The course strives to introduce students to the major psychological concepts and terms while also providing opportunity for in-depth analysis and exploration of the topic.

The course is divided into two main sections:

1. History and Approaches
2. Topics

Each section is then divided into smaller units.

In the first section, students will explore the different schools of thought in psychology and how they have contribute to the field as it is known today. The major approaches covered are:

  • structuralism
  • functionalism
  • psychoanalysis
  • behaviorism
  • humanism


In the second section, students will explore a variety of topics related to psychology. The goal is to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the field. The topics covered are:

  • research methods
  • biological bases of behavior
  • sensation and perception
  • states of consciousness
  • learning
  • cognition
  • motivation
  • development
  • personality
  • testing and individual differences
  • abnormal behavior
  • treatment of abnormal behavior
  • social psychology


The basics of AP Psychology include understanding the different schools of thought, different perspectives, and different areas of focus within psychology. The different schools of thought are important to know because they provide different ways of thinking about psychological phenomenon. The perspectives provide different ways of looking at behavior and mental processes. The areas of focus help to identify what psychologists study.
